Empowering Women Through Their Education

More than 130 million girls are out of school today (Commit2Change, n.d.). Education provides girls and their families with opportunities to escape poverty and unsafe conditions (Commit2Change, n.d.). Girls are 1.5 times more likely to not attend their primary education due to expensive schooling, social beliefs of child marriage, or even warfare and natural disasters (Commit2Change, n.d.). Depending on the country, girls’ education is constantly threatened and schools can be attacked due to assumptions that girls do not belong in school (Their News Team, 2022).

Countries must begin to value the importance that education can provide for girls. If girls are educated, they tend to provide more than 90% of their future income to bettering themselves and their family’s conditions (Commit2Change, n.d.). The United Nations touched on the importance of inclusive education through their Sustainable Development Goals (United Nations, n.d.). Goal 4 strives for equitable education for all students, while goal 5 focuses on the importance of empowering women and girls (United Nations, n.d.). These developmental goals must be valued throughout communities.

To improve educational opportunities for girls, countries must stop prioritizing marriage and pregnancy over education, increase funding, ensure water and sanitary conditions are prevalent in school and hire more female teachers (Their News Team, 2017). About 15 million girls are married before they are 18 years old, leaving their education to focus on their family (Their News Team, 2017). The ideal for child marriage and pregnancy must diminish, while encouraging the empowerment that education can provide. Countries continue to lose millions of dollars by not educating female students, so girls’ education must become a priority in funding (Their News Team, 2017). With enhanced sanitary conditions, provided water and privacy, girls would be more likely to feel comfortable attending school, especially during their menstrual cycle (Their News Team, 2017). By hiring more female teachers, female students are more likely to feel comfortable attending school because they can relate to their educator (Their News Team, 2017).

Organizations like yours help raise awareness for issues that prevent girls from obtaining an education. To gain a better understanding of what may be preventing countries from investing in their girls’ educational needs, could your organization please share with me a few major concerns that halt communities from bettering educational opportunities for their female students?
